    General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS)

Post by Cabrillo-1 on Tue Jan 26, 2016 12:51 am

GMRS radios are often sold as FRS/GMRS radios.

Dedicated GMRS channels are 15-22 on FRS/GMRS radios. Use of these channels require a $65 for 5 years FCC license. Posession of this license also entitles the user to transmit at higher power on channels 1-7.

GMRS can be used both radio-to-radio (simplex) or with a repeater (radio-to-repeater-to-radio).
The repeater allows better coverage in urban or hilly areas where simplex FRS radios have problems.

Here's a step by step guide to registering for an FCC Registration Number (FRN) which is then used to purchase your license. If you skip the FRN then you'll use your Social Security Number when registering for the license. If you get an amateur radio license (ham) you'll also use your FRN.

How to Guide: Register for an FCC Registration Number and a GMRS License

I have a Tera TR - 505 5 watt ht. Good audio. You have to use a computer or clone it to input data as it is commercial. Seems ok for 100 bucks.
