    How to reach Battalion members?

Post by Darlingangel4ever2000 on Sun Feb 14, 2016 11:11 pm

I realize that there is a Facebook page that keeps CERT members connected but will we at one point have a system like MYN (Map Your Neighborhood) where we can each have a pamphlet/shingle of each other's contact information if we do not have neither HAM experience or walkie talkies.

Both 5 Step.la and Map Your Neighborhood keep these contact info sheets within the community or down at the block level.
Privacy is always a big concern with it comes to contact lists. For example, anything we collect as CERT Coordinators is held in strict confidence. We would not compile and publish a contact sheet to CERT members but we might provide the a local neighborhood list to the neighborhood leaders so that they could reach out to their members.

Patrick is correct - - as much as some organizers would like to have a data bank of, for example, all individuals with functional disabilities, for planning purposes and quick access in an emergency, the information is viewed as PRIVATE and people will generally NOT share it with "authorities."

What the MYN program does is have a small group of immediate neighbors (a Block), who know (and trust) each other personally, share this type of information.  In a disaster, the neighbors will look out for each other, and when higher-level assistance is needed, they can call for specific assistance (via FRS/GMRS radio) to their Block location from the nearest CERT IC, without revealing an individual's personal information or location.

What are you suggesting exchanging information; individual CERT members or Battalion Coordinators?

Maybe there's some confusion about the kinds of "information" which may be viewed as a privacy issue.

Personal information, including medical conditions that might be critical in a disaster, might be nice to know ahead of time, to plan resources all the way up to Battalion level - - but people will generally NOT share that with a "big data base" because of privacy concerns.  On the other hand, close neighbors (i.e. a Map Your Neighborhood Block) do generally will share this information with each other, as a part of their Block preparedness workshop, with the understanding that the personal information goes no farther.

IN A DISASTER, the MYN Block members take care of each other as much as possible, and "flow up" resource needs from the Blocks, to their Neighborhood CERT IC, and above, as needed, using the FRS/GMRS radio networks.  The Block lead can request medical attention for an individual with a specific condition, and the CERT IC lead can decide how best to provide it - - send aid, transport individual, call EMTs, etc.

To help First In and Battalion levels plan for quantity and location of resources, it may well be acceptable to get SUMMARY numbers of various needs, medical conditions, etc. at the Neighborhood level WITHOUT PERSONAL INFORMATION (names, addresses), and make that available to First In or Battalion coordinators.

We will ask some of our MYN Block members about this, and let you know.

That might be good for a CERT team leader to have, MYN block summaries consisting of meeting points, points of contacts (phone, email, FRS or ham call signs), and medical concerns.
